What to Do If You’re Having Side Effects from a Medication

Learn what steps to take if your medication is causing uncomfortable or disruptive side effects.

Updated over 3 months ago

If you’re having uncomfortable side effects or your medication is interfering with daily activities, let your provider know as soon as possible.

Important: Never stop taking prescribed medication on your own, even if you’re experiencing side effects. Some medications must be tapered gradually to avoid serious complications. Contact your provider about any concerning symptoms and continue taking the medication as prescribed until you hear back from your care team.

If you experience any of the following, seek emergency care immediately by calling 911 or going to your nearest emergency room:

  • Severe allergic reactions (difficulty breathing, swelling, severe rash)

  • Chest pain or heart palpitations

  • Severe dizziness or fainting

  • Sudden vision changes

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Any symptom that makes you feel unsafe

If you think you might need a different medication or an adjustment to your current dose, schedule an appointment with your provider. Sometimes these issues can be resolved by changing the timing, dosage, or taking the medication with food.

To ask a question or report side effects, log in to your MyVisana patient portal at www.myvisana.com and click “Messages” from the left-hand menu. Then select “Message your Provider” and click “New Message” to send a note directly to your provider.

Include the following details in your message if possible:

  • The medication name and dosage

  • How long you’ve been taking it

  • The side effects or symptoms you’re experiencing

  • How these issues affect your daily life

  • Any steps you’ve tried to manage the side effects

  • Other medications or supplements you’re currently taking

If you need help contacting your provider, let us know and a Care Coordinator will assist you.
