How to Request a Refill for a Medication You’re Already Taking

Requesting a refill for your current medication is usually quick and easy, but it can depend on your specific medication and how long it’s been since your last visit.

Here’s a simple guide to requesting a refill:

First, check if you have existing refills

Some prescriptions include multiple refills that don’t require provider approval. To check if you already have refills available:

  • Check the label on your medication bottle — it will show how many refills remain.

  • Or call your pharmacy to confirm.

If you have refills left, you can request your medication directly from the pharmacy — no need to message your Visana provider.

Requesting a refill

If you need a new refill, please request a new one with your provider at least 5–7 days before you run out.

  • If your medication needs prior authorization, try to allow 1–2 weeks when possible.

  • If you’re running low sooner than expected, message us right away and we’ll do our best to help.

How to request a refill through MyVisana

  1. Go to Messages and select New Message to send a message to your provider.

  2. Include in your message:

    • Medication name and dosage

    • Pharmacy name and address

    • When you need the refill (note if you’re running low)

    • Any new symptoms or side effects

It’s important to bear in mind that prescription refills sometimes require a follow-up appointment. This isn't just a policy requirement — it's an important safety measure designed to protect your health and ensure your medications are working effectively.

Your provider may require an appointment before refilling prescriptions when:

  • It's been more than 12 months since your last appointment

  • You're taking medications that require regular monitoring (like blood pressure medications, diabetes medications, or hormones)

  • Your provider needs to review recent lab results before continuing treatment

  • You've reported new symptoms or side effects

  • Your medication requires periodic safety assessments

Your provider will inform you if you need an appointment before refilling your meds. If that is the case for you, please schedule your follow up visit with extra time before you run out of medication.

  • Your health status may have changed since your last visit

  • Lab results may indicate the need for dosage adjustments

  • Some medications require regular safety checks to prevent complications
